Topic 6 - Nurturing a Social community to build deeper relationships

Bellah, Madsen, Sullivan, Swidler and Tipton (1985), in their book Habits of the Heart, define community as follows:
A community is a group of people who are socially interdependent, who participate together in discussion and decision making, and who share certain practices that both define the community and are nurtured by it. Such a community is not quickly formed. It almost aways has a history and so is also a community of memory, defined in part by its past and its memory of the past. (p.333)

There are plenty of social media tool in today's society. In some words, these tools are somewhat of exceptions. But How Social Media Might Improve Personal Relationships ?

"Now that’s not to say that I think social media is killing personal relationships really. The only ones who can do that are ourselves if we slack off and stop making a decent effort just because social media is “easier.” In fact, I do think social media can do positive things in helping to build relationships — especially new ones.
Most importantly, I think social media tools have the ability to serve as a stepping stone to deeper and more personal relationships with those we want to build them with. For example, I’d known a particular freelance writing colleague for a while. And I knew she lived just a few towns over. We got to know each other mostly through blogs, but also kept in touch occasionally through Twitter. Because of that, we later met in person a couple of times. And at that point we really took the time to get to know each other better on a more personal level — discussing family, local shops, and such rather than solely work. In that case I like to think of social media as a sort of extended introduction."

Conclusion:

In my opinion, we had to admit that social media indeed decrease the time people talking to each other face to face. But we also have to admit that people communicate to each other more than before through the social media.

what you think about social media?

what you think about social media?

Although we all know that social media develop rapidly, it just seem somethings happen these years. In some elderly people's opinion, they know something about social media, but they are not really interested in reading that, or may even not believe that. Because they think sometimes the social media are just advertising what they want and what they can benefit from. However, anyway, social media do play an important role in our life now, which make our life more colourful and wonderful. :)  xxxxxx

RE: New video warns of online dangers

New video warns of online dangers
Tuesday, 03 September 2013
A short film on the perils of social media, created by brother and sister duo Samantha and Shane Asbury, is now being featured in a statewide cyber safety campaign.
The Victorian Coalition Government’s It’s There For Life campaign follows increasing reports from young people that posts and images on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter have resulted in them missing out on jobs, being bullied and stalked or even breaking the law.
Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith said the film creatively captured the issues around online posting.
“The Coalition Government is taking action to help young people protect their privacy and their reputation and the film is a great reminder of why it’s important to think twice before uploading photos or posting online,” Mr Smith said.
“We want young Victorians to have the best start, but if you've posted something inappropriate online there’s a chance a prospective employer may have found the post and made a judgement before they’ve even met you.”
With many more employers and recruitment agencies scanning online posts of potential candidates the video is part of a broader Coalition Government campaign letting young people know that whenever you post or share something online, it really is there for life.
Ms Asbury said the video was a useful tool in teaching young people about the possible consequences of using social media.
“As secondary school teachers, both Shane and I know that all kids, from year 1 to 12, have grown up with technology all around them and easy access to computers, tablets and smart phones,” Ms Asbury said.
“But we also realise young people don’t always understand that when they post something online, or when their friends do, it might have consequences down the track. You can’t take it back.”
